San Jacinto Chapter #1 - Houston, Texas
Adopts Historic Texas General Land Office Holdings
During November 2005, San Jacinto Chapter #1 made a cash contribution to the Save Texas History! document and map preservation program of the Texas General Land Office.
As a result of the contribution, Chapter #1 has been given the privilege of adopting the 1836 Draft of the Republic of Texas Constitution, which is held in the archives of the Land Office. The history of this interesting document has been carefully researched by Mr. Jerry C. Drake, and he has graciously shared his research paper with us.
The contribution also enabled Chapter #1 to adopt an old map known as “Harris County Sketch File 3, Perkins Island - San Jacinto River”, which is an 1857 depiction of the bays, estuaries and islands around the San Jacinto Battleground.
One of the stated objects of our organization is "…to foster the preservation of documents and relics.." relating to the early settlement of Texas. The maps and documents of the Texas General Land Office archives are among the most important records of our ancestors' activities here, and it has been the pleasure of our Chapter to help ensure that those records are carefully preserved and made available for future generations. For more information see the Texas General Land Office’s web page www.savetexashistory.org.
San Jacinto Chapter #1 extends its gratitude to the following members and friends who contributed to the donation:
