The Sons of the Republic of Texas
-
Seeks to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women
who settled Texas and won its independence through great
personal sacrifice and dedication to the cause of freedom.

Encourages historical research, fosters preservation of documents
and relics of Texana, and recommends the publication of original
records as well as biographical and other historical works based on
the Republic of Texas

Promotes appropriate observance by private citizens and public
bodies of days memorable in the Republic, including Independence Day
(March 2), the Fall of the Alamo (March 6), the Massacre at Goliad
(March 27), San Jacinto Day (April 21), the Battle of Gonzales
(October 2), and Stephen F. Austin's birthday (November3).

Works independently or in cooperation with state agencies and with
other patriotic organizations in activities
designed to obtain proper recognition, preservation and/or marking of
places of historical significance.

Advocates the study of Texas history in schools through its annual
essay contest for scholarship awards totaling $6,000 to high school
seniors.

Sponsors the annual $2,500 Summerfield G. Roberts Award in literature
based on history of people and events in the Republic of Texas.

Administers the annual Presidio La Bahia Award of $2,000 for research
or other work in connection with Texas' Spanish Colonial period.

Maintains the Spanish-Texas Microfilm Center and O'Connor Collection
of historical materials.
Eligibility for Membership
Any male person of good moral character who is a direct descendant of a
loyal resident citizen of Texas prior to her merger with the United States
of America on February 19, 1846, is eligible for membership in the Sons of
the Republic of Texas. Upon application of a parent or guardian, a
boy less than eighteen (18) years of age who is otherwise qualified may be
admitted to Junior Membership, automatically to become a full member upon
his eighteenth birthday. A person who is deceased but otherwise
qualified may be admitted to Posthumous Membership.
