SRT San Jacinto Chapter #1 - Projects
USS Texas SSN 775
At a regular Chapter monthly meeting, the following motion was made by Chapter member Mr. J. Richard (Dick) Reese and seconded by Mr. Tom Houston that:
BE IT RESOLVED, the San Jacinto Chapter of The Sons of the Republic of Texas recognizes the commissioning into service by the U.S. Navy a new submarine named the USS Texas (SSN 775) in the year 2006, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the San Jacinto Chapter intends to present annual awards to certain outstanding enlisted submariners of the USS Texas, and hereby proposes to the U. S. Navy that annually, the Captain of the USS Texas will submit “Biographical and Service Reports” for the six (6) most outstanding enlisted submariners of the USS Texas, for the San Jacinto Chapter to select :
A. One (1) winner of the “Outstanding Enlisted Submariner of the Year Award,” to be awarded a $1,000 check, a Certificate and a Texas Flag. This will be awarded, when feasible, in Houston, Texas in the spring of each year (first ceremony to be held in Spring, 2007), and
B. Five (5) “Exemplary Enlisted Submariner of the Year Awards,” each to be awarded a $50 check, a Certificate and a Texas Flag. These will be awarded aboard the U.S.S. Texas, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the San Jacinto, from time to time, will present books and other media on Texas History, to be placed in the library of the USS Texas for all to enjoy learning more about Texas and its wonderful history, to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved the independence of Texas, set the young Republic upon its high course among the nations of the world, and finally secured its admission as a State of the United States.
This motion was passed by the membership present at the meeting on July 7, 2005.
